Florida's west coast holds the largest collection of rare, midcentury modern homes designed in the Sarasota School of Architecture style. This particularly famous 1962 treasure was designed by architect Mary Hook, who also designed the neighborhood and lived in the home for years afterward. You can see the outside spaces from every single room in the house, with ample sliding glass doors, floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights. There's even a long breezeway through the central space.
Located in Sarasota's Sandy Hook neighborhood, it's just a few feet down a sandy path to a private beach on the Gulf of Mexico, and close to the Siesta Key Village shops and restaurants. The newest owners have carefully restored it with the help of professional architects and designers, including installing a new air conditioning system, and are now listing it for $1,695,000. The three-bedroom, three-bath home was included in the "Art of Preservation" issue of Atomic Ranch Magazine, which calls the property "a lasting tribute to the Sarasota School of Architecture." There's even an artist's studio in back that is currently used as a gym.
Realtor Martie Lieberman, an expert in midcentury modern home sales, holds the listing and describes the house as "solid, good architecture focused on the space itself," which sits on a half-acre lot. "This particular style focused on making sure every wall slid open so you could go outside."
