The ‘Ruskin House,’ one of Florida’s most ‘extraordinary’ homes, will soon go to auction
A truly one-of-a-kind house in Tampa Bay is about to go to auction. Simply referred to as "The Ruskin House," the home was designed and built by local architect Mike Calvino, who spent 7 years on the project.
The 3 bedroom, 4 bathroom home sits at the head of the Little Manatee River overlooking Tampa Bay, and is an ominous temple of concrete, glass and wood. In a 2005 feature, the Herald-Tribune called the home "extraordinary" and "one-of-a-kind," explaining that the actual idea for the home's enormous roof made of curving wooden beams was inspired by a shell. “It’s about the motion of sailing in the water,” said Calvino to the paper. “My idea for the structure comes out of wanting to mark the land with a shell that is kind of like a ruin. And that will provide the major structure for it and kind of the foundation piece."
The 2,753-square-foot home features elevated glass walkways, built-in furniture, a rooftop deck, an indoor heated pool, a hot tub, as well as a private beach and boat dock. The home also has a separate residence, called "The Boathouse," which includes a separate bedroom, bath and screened-in porch.
The "Ruskin House" will go to auction in February of 2020, with a starting bid of $1,450,000. The listing agent is Brian Dee of Century 21 Beggins Enterprises.
