Our favorite costumes from Spooky Empire’s Ultimate Halloween Weekend
Spooky Empire's Ultimate Halloween Weekend went down all Halloween weekend at the Hyatt Regency, and it was especially one for the kiddies, featuring a "creepy kids" panel that memorably pulled in the shockingly charming girls from The Shining (except for maybe that creepy talk about the cat buried in the garden) and a Willy Wonka reunion where Michael Bollner (Augustus Gloop) stole hearts away from that total ham Rusty Goffe (cartwheeling Oompa Loompa) the whole session with his story about busting his head up take after take in that dang chocolate river.
While Burt Reynolds drew the most laughs and George Romero drew the most intrigue (and shared staunch opinions on modern zombies and zombie comedies), it was the Scream panel that perhaps drew the biggest crowd. With Matthew Lillard joyously invading people's space during the Q&A session, tears flowed as a generation of Ghostface's stunned victims crammed in to see Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard share funny stories from playing with corn syrup blood to partying in David Arquette's trailer from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. due to night shoots. Overall, the panels were thoroughly entertaining (especially John Kassir, who basically did a performance as the Crypt Keeper and a showcase of his other impressive voice work), with the Q&A sessions that followed creating indulgent, spontaneous moments that make Spooky Empire worth treating yourself for.
An added allure of attending Spooky Empire on Halloween itself: When you're walking amid the type of sensational costumes that you're unlikely to see trooping through downtown, it's easier to let the imagination play into the fear of these shadows following close behind, hiding in your periphery or dead ahead and daunting. Here are a few of our favorite spooky costumes we caught this year.
