Everyone’s roasting this ‘Orlando Sentinel’ op-ed about how Disney is too woke
They say the United States is a divided country, but it sure doesn't feel that way when a truly harebrained opinion piece gets dropped on the internet. Americans of all stripes can always seem to come together on Twitter around a good, old-fashioned ratio. And that's exactly what happened when the Orlando Sentinel dropped an op-ed from a certified Adult Disney Fan™ about how new measures of cast inclusivity and updates to racist rides were ruining the Walt Disney World experience.
In a piece titled "I love Disney World, but wokeness is ruining the experience," Las Vegas-area district attorney Jonathan VanBoskerck decried Disney's loosening of their strict employee dress code and updates to rides like Jungle Cruise, Splash Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean.
"The next time I ride Jungle Cruise I will not be thinking about the gloriously entertaining puns of the skippers, I will be thinking about Disney’s political agenda," he wrote. "That’s a mood killer."
In the case of Splash Mountain, VanBoskerck wants his ride based on a 1946 movie that claimed slaves lived happy, idyllic lives on the plantation to be free of politics. The Clark County deputy district attorney just wants to leave behind his job of advocating for the death penalty for a place that's free of politics. (When a conservative says "politics" in a negative way, they typically mean "consequences.")
Some vindictive editor decided to share the piece along with a photo of VanBoskerck, wearing a Hawaiian shirt in front of a shelf of Disney figurines. This pushed Twitter over the edge, with all corners coming together to slam the take as some Lee Greenwood played softly in the background. Take a look at some of our favorite posts up top.
